The Black Lives Matter demonstrations of June 2020 were the largest anti-Black racism protests ever seen and turned the world upside down. It was hard not to have read about them or not to have seen the images on the news. You might have had conversations with friends, fellow students or your neighbour about the protests. If you might not have been, you almost certainly know people who were deeply affected by these events. What were, and still are, the experiences of those personally affected by the protests and invested in their after-effects? Where do we stand, two and a half years on?

In Remember what you forgot, director Clarice Gargard wonders if the BLM movement was a tipping point for change. To answer this, she journeys through time and space and retrieves memories from everyday resisters in the Netherlands, Suriname and Curaçao in the hope that they can foreshadow the future. The film will be shown in Dutch with English subtitles.

 

We will kick off with an introduction by Naomie Pieter, face of the BLM protests in the Netherlands and organiser of the first Black Gay Pride NL. After the documentary, we will continue the conversation with moderator Mounir Samuel, a political scientist who writes about social revolution and societal change for NRC Handelsblad and the Groene Amsterdammer.

Nitesh Bharosa is Professor in GovTech at Delft University of Technology and Diversity and Inclusion officer for the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. He also aims to raise awareness for the problems faced by Dutch Caribbean students at TU Delft.

Rebecca Baugh recently graduated in Urbanism and Building Sciences at TU Delft on the topic of colonialism and neo-colonialism in the TU Delft Global Housing studio. She has also been a Diversity & Inclusion student assistant at the African Studies Centre at Leiden University since 2020.

Also a recent graduate of TU Delft, Miriam Jimenez Lluva studied Industrial Design Engineering, specialising in Inclusive Design. Miriam and Rebecca will reflect on how the BLM protests have shaped not only their own experiences but also their mutual friendship.
